‘The Boogie’ brings jazz, hip-hop, soul and R&B together with an effortless sense of musicality from Summers Sons & C.Tappin. Taken from their new album Lightworks, the South London trio step away from their sample-led foundations, embracing live instrumentation to create something that feels both nostalgic and timeless. Trumpet, piano and rhythm section form a beautifully layered arrangement, with Turt's effortless MC delivery sitting alongside flowing vocals and an ensemble of harmonies. Particularly striking is the way the vocals ride the trumpet, almost becoming part of the instrumentation themselves, as they declare they're bringing the boogie back. Inspired in part by seeing D'Angelo & The Vanguard perform live in 2018, Lightworks reflects a shared appreciation for musicianship, collaboration and the energy of playing together. Eight years in the making, this is a wonderfully assured expression of that creative connection.
