‘Grapefruit’ the instrumental title track from Queenstown Collective’s EP of the same name is a focused, groove-led introduction to the band’s world. There's no vocals, no hooks built around lyrics. Just five incredible London jazz musicians in conversation, leaning fully into their instrument as a living, breathing form. The track opens with tightly stacked brass before settling into a rhythm that feels deliberate and grounded. The drums enter with a firm but fluid pulse, giving the arrangement room to stretch. A bright, agile trumpet solo feature from JSPHYNX brings lift and momentum, whilst the keys respond with warmth and tonal depth. The transitions feel earned, shaped by listening as much as technique. “Grapefruit is a word that I think really describes our music,” says drummer and bandleader, James Morgan. “As a band, our music is juicy, bright, and a big kick of flavour. But the flavours vary, from the sweet to the bitter and the complex, as we document our experience of living in the capital’s music scene and all it has to offer.” That balance is clear here. There’s brightness in the brass, edge in the groove, and complexity in the interplay. As a lead single, ‘Grapefruit’ establishes Queenstown Collective as a band committed to craft, cohesion and the evolving language of contemporary London jazz.
