Malcolm Strachan

Malcolm Strachan’s 'Step On It' feels like it could have been lifted from a forgotten 1970s soul-jazz reel, soaked in the rich cinematic warmth of Donald Byrd at his most expansive. There’s an infectious funk pulse running through it and smooth horn lines that glide rather than shout, but what makes it land is the depth of arrangement. It’s layered beautifully, with strings adding that widescreen, almost soundtrack-like quality that makes the whole track feel immersive and transportive. Atholl Ransome’s flute work adds another elegant texture, weaving effortlessly through the groove, while Malcolm’s trumpet remains the anchor - soulful, sharp and full of personality without ever overplaying. As a preview of Strachan's new album Look On The Bright Side, it leans confidently into his love and inspiration of 70s soul-jazz and jazz-funk, but still feels vibrant, fresh and deeply musical.
