Dis Fig, aka NYC experimental artist and producer Felicia Chen, is releasing new album What To Make Of These Mortal Hands in October via Thrill Jockey, and has shared a second single from the record. 'Psaltery', named after the zither-like stringed instrument that features heavily on this astounding track, is composed of two distinct halves: a sparse, balladic introduction, showcasing Chen's keening vocal, followed by an industrial coda of rippling noise and overwhelming percussive force. The gothic drama of an artist like Chelsea Wolfe provides something of a touchstone here, but there's a sleekness and clarity to this music that's all Chen's own. .
“The psaltery is interesting, it’s not an instrument I’ve had the chance to see anyone else playing,” Chen says. “You’re supposed to bow it, but I don't really like the way that sounds. I love picking up instruments with no intention of perfecting them, and finding my own way of tuning it and finessing it." She's taken it into potent new territory here.
