Austrian-Iranian songwriter and producer Sofie Royer has been cutting her own groove for a while now, her music straddling genres and forms, usually accompanied by striking visuals and a notably well-considered approach to the whole artistic package. New single 'Opium' is no exception: a lean, purposeful track built on a loping, syncopated beat (apparently, and slightly unexpectedly, heavily influenced by The Cribs) and clenched-jaw guitars, topped off by a spiralling chorus and Royer's full-throated vocal. It's sharp work.
