Ships of the Pharaohs deliver something immediately special with 'Sun Is Rising', the debut single from this London-based collective brought together by producer Last Nubian. What began as a live band assembled for a festival showcase in 2023 has evolved into something with a genuine creative pulse of its own. Built on live instrumentation, warm synth textures and the kind of real musicianship that can't be manufactured, the track draws naturally from acid jazz, soul, bossa nova, house and drum & bass - wearing its influences lightly while sounding entirely like itself. Guest vocalist Red Bird rides the soaring hooks with ease, sitting beautifully inside an arrangement that breathes and moves with the spontaneity of the group's jazz roots. The chemistry between vocalist Achanté, keyboardist Goldbar and bassist Dougan is what makes it sing. With more releases promised across the summer, 'Sun Is Rising' is an exciting first glimpse of an incredible collective with plenty still to reveal.
