Ruby Wood
List Pick
July 1, 2026
Huddersfield-born vocalist and songwriter Ruby Wood opens neo-soul track 'This Thing Called Life' with a disarming invitation -"can I share something that's on my mind" and what follows is a meditation on connection, perspective and the quiet wonder of existence. As Ruby puts it: "this is a song about our shared humanity - a reminder that whatever our background or circumstances, we're all partaking in the same fragile, beautiful experience together." Alongside being known as lead vocalist with Submotion Orchestra, Ruby is firmly stepping into her own lane on First Word Records, and this is a statement of intent. Illa J (younger brother of the late J Dilla and a compelling artist in his own right) adds a verse that brings depth and quiet assurance; a second perspective that grounds the song's message in something real. Leeds-based all-star hip-hop big band Abstract Orchestra provide the orchestral weight beneath it all - horns, strings, a full sound that lifts the track considerably. The outro's chorus arrives like a collective exhale, closing with an unmistakable feeling of unity.
