‘Puff of Smoke’ is the new track from indie duo Ruby Doomsday. It feels like the hazy, nostalgic soundtrack to a late-night drive through grainy, abstract colours and disorienting textures: the keyboard riffs twinkle innocently, the guitars jangle and twang; lo-fi tape loops and droning accordions add a dense, slightly sinister juxtaposition. “The song is inspired by that mad scene at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey where he drives into the black hole,” explains Joey Julliard. “I've always been obsessed with that bit, probably cos I don't understand it - I don't think you're meant to. It's like a visual representation of the great unknown - the moments after the end. Apparently in 1968, when the film played on a loop in cinemas, people used to set their timers and come in every 2 hours just to watch that scene.” Catch the band live in London over the next few months.
