Cardiff duo Papaya Noon have carved out a lane that feels entirely their own, with jazz-infused funk and soul with neo-soul sensibilities, drawing on classic R&B hip hop and electronica in equal measure. 'on your side' is a fine showcase of exactly that. Greg's Rhodes, slinky synths and deeply funky bassline create the kind of groove that moves you before you've clocked what's happening, while Annie's vocal harmonies sit on top with a warmth and ease that draws you straight in. The concept is quietly poignant: written from the perspective of a breakup where someone is over-explaining their reasons for leaving, but you don't need it. You're already on their side. Their debut EP Through The Moods drops in July, and on this evidence it's one to watch out for.
