Painted Bird, the moniker of Angus Rogers, London-based poet and frontman of cult jazz-punks Opus Kink, has revealed his debut single, ‘Purgatory Man’. It’s a gentle track that builds an absorbing folk-landscape from the acoustic guitar upwards, with complementary textures slowly being added into the mix over the course of the track. The distant honk of gritty saxophone supports his voice, which drifts from almost conversational during the verses, to anthemic and melodic in the chorus. He says the track “represents a landmark in my quest to write THE existentialist pop song and draws on themes of meaninglessness, love, fear, rebirth and condemnation.” Keep an eye out for more from Painted Bird in the coming months.
