Shelter from the heat with five minutes of gentle suspended animation from Australian avant-garde composer Oren Ambarchi. 'Hidden Tableau (Excerpt)' is the lead single from his forthcoming record Cooked, out 25 September on legendary Chicago indie label Drag City, and it's a strikingly disorientated, fluid piece of music, constantly threatening to collapse its floaty progression into a resolution that, happily, never quite arrives.

The flecks of piano and tingly ride cymbals just about give the track a sense of coherence, but beyond that everything else (the hints of guitar and woodwind, occasional touches of bass) seems to drift more or less indeterminately. That's a good thing: there's so much space here, so much depth and possibility to explore. Ambarchi is a veteran of the Australian free improv scene, and brings his wealth of experience of instinctive music-making to bear on 'Hidden Tableau (Excerpt)' to transportive effect.
