‘Growing Roots’ is the new release from Modern Biology, AKA biologist and ‘plant music’ composer Tarun Nayar. His moving ambient creations are primarily made using his device, the Pocket SCÍON, which is able to turn tiny electronic signals into music. On this particular track, he explains: “The track came from a live improvisation with my good friend Zekarias Musele Thompson on saxophone. We were playing in Portland, Oregon, on the Mushroom Church tours. I’m so stoked to have it involved in this groundbreaking compilation of plant and mushroom-inspired pieces.” The compilation he mentions is Plants Can Dance, a forthcoming release from curator Brian d'Souza (aka Auntie Flo) that brings together global artists to explore the creative possibilities of biosonification – the transformation of signals from the natural world into sound. It drops on June 26th, 2026.
