Hayley Lloyd makes a soulful entrance with ‘When You Play’, a beautifully understated debut built around her deep, rich vocal and YELAH’s hypnotic, piano-led production. Opening with a gorgeous instrumental piano melody, the track gradually draws you in before Hayley’s voice takes centre stage, its warmth and richness carrying every note with real feeling. The accompanying video captures the intimate atmosphere beautifully, with Hayley performing behind a microphone in a dimly lit, red-hued setting that evokes the mood of a late-night jazz club. Exploring what she describes as "connection through music", the song speaks to those moments when live music hits so deeply it feels like it’s speaking straight to your soul. Drawing on jazz and soul influences including Angie Stone, Lalah Hathaway and Anita Baker, the Manchester-born, Leeds-based singer has found her way back to music after discovering a community gospel choir, and ‘When You Play’ feels like a confident first step into a promising solo chapter.
