'onyx' is Halima's follow-up to her debut album SWEET TOOTH, and her first fully self-produced release since 2022 - control reclaimed, quite literally, in the mix itself. The track drifts between pop, R&B and soft rock without settling on any one, guitars doing most of the emotional lifting, its chorus chopping and speeding her own voice into something ghostly and half-familiar. As Brooklyn based Halima explains: "Following a heartbreak that split me open, it felt right to work alone in the newness of solitude. I sped up the whole track and let my voice pitch with it, then brought the original tempo back at the very end, like a final goodbye. It feels like a memory now. A distant one." Her phrasing nods to classic R&B without leaning on nostalgia for effect.
