Nottingham quartet Do Nothing have returned with their new single, ‘Smile’. Of the track, which was inspired by an online cartoonist who suffered from schizophrenia and sadly took his own life, lead singer Chris Bailey explains. “He was obsessed with this puzzle book that was basically unsolvable, and made a sprawling, poorly drawn comic [that concluded with] his suicide note. It's a difficult and often incomprehensible read, but I was really inspired by it.” Musically, this is represented by a wonky swagger that infects the groove of the bass and drums, as well as the shunting, drunken guitars. At points, the track diverts from its playfulness and into a grating wall of distortion and dissonance. ‘Smile’ is taken from Do Nothing’s second album, Friend World, which drops on November 6th, 2026, via Submarine Cat Records.
