‘Queen Of Spades’ is the latest track from Georgia-born, California-based artist Deloyed Elze. This is a beautiful, tender cut centred on simple acoustic guitar chords and an intuitive, memorable set of hooks. But the subtly experimental production takes it to a new level, with drifting electronic swells and unique arrangements adding something truly addictive. On the passing of his grandmother and the inspiration behind the song, he says: “She had a laundry list of factoids that she collected over the years: she used to hustle people at pool at the local dive, drove a semi for a meat delivery company, worked in Vegas auditing black jack dealers, and she played a mean game of a card game called spades.” Give Deloyd Elze’s new EP Nellene (which is out now via Concord Records), a listen.
