'Maybe Selena' from Clyde Crooks sails close to the wind, its sense of melodrama frequently threatening to spill over from enjoyable camp to glossy pastiche (the video treads a similar line, Crooks made up like Oscar Wilde against a Lynchian curtain backdrop). Happily, Crooks just about manages to strike the right balance, perhaps due to the strength of the song's central hooks. The instrumentation is straightforward goth-pop, all snaking rhythm section and Cure-esque chiming guitars, while Crooks' vocal performance is delicate and keenly-felt. To be honest, it'd all be too on-the-nose for its own good were it not for Crooks' insistent, winding melodies bringing everything into focus; that ear for raw melody gestures towards a bright future for the LA songwriter.

Crooks has shared an appropriately highly-strung statement with the release: “‘Maybe Selena’ is a requiem for a friendship. When my best friend began to distance himself, his approval became as precious to me as it was scarce. I used this song to itemise my resentments and mourn his full attention. Now, it’s his favourite song of mine – but he doesn’t know it’s about him.”
