It'd be easy to take Claire Rousay's success for granted: her work has become so emblematic of a certain emotional strain in contemporary ambient music that it's no longer a surprise to see her high up prestigious festival lineups, performing in world-renowned venues and garnering such a rapturous level of critical acclaim. Yet this is such singular music, so perfectly conceptualised and clear-eyed despite regular generic shifts and open collaborations, but complex and uncompromising; not the kind of stuff that usually crosses oceans and borders so easily. How happy, then, that Rousay continues to break new artistic and critical ground in her work so frequently, with this new collab with Zander Raymond no exception. Her trademark ambience and processed vocal roots us in her distinctive canon, but there's so much space and possibility here that it feels once again like she and Raymond are pushing the boundaries of their practice further than ever.
'can't we have both' is a special track, the first from their new album Something Good, out 29 January via Thrill Jockey.
