Starting as an attempt at trip-hop, 'Same Rules' is the brooding final preview of Chat Pile's forthcoming album. Doused in reverb and ominous octave effects, it's hard to tell if the bottom end is bass guitar or the deeper end of a piano (and this is a very good thing). Confidently slow-paced, unsettling chord progressions squirm beneath haunting vocals and equally eerie guitars before its inevitable breaking point two thirds of the way through. Exploding into the dirgy combination of screamo and hardcore that we've come to expect from the band, Chat Pile continue to evolve whilst existing entirely in a league of their own. Accompanied by an equally arresting video (directed by Bug Mane), 'Same Rules' shows an exceptional level of depth as we anticipate the arrival of Who Loves the Sun on the 4th of September.
