‘The Watchers’ feels like the musical equivalent of a night-time cityscape - it's slick, shadowy and quietly unpredictable. Brainstory ease into a laid-back psychedelic groove, with plush horns giving the track a suitably luxurious feel while a subtle tension simmers underneath. Hailing from Long Beach, California, the trio have spent years carving out their own space between funk, soul, psych and jazz in their now-defunct ‘Shoebox’ studio, which has been the inspiration for their forthcoming Shoebox Days EP. Once again there’s a sense of that intimate, DIY history in the track’s easy confidence, reminiscent in their previous single 'Blend', as Brainstory turn just over two minutes into a fully formed late-night scene.
