Folk eccentric Biita Houdei is releasing her debut album This Bed Was Made For Me on 18 September, and has shared this excellent new single from it alongside a pleasingly camp, spooky video. 'Night Fright' is a spiralling, uncanny piece of twilit folk-rock, its central guitar chords threatening a resolution that never quite comes, with Houdei's yearning vocal style recalling the folk tradition of the Southern California mountains in which much of the album was assembled. She made the record with Sahil Ansari and Haley Heynderickx in Topanga Canyon; the likes of Judee Sill and Neil Young haunt those sunbleached valleys, and you can hear their influence over 'Night Fright'. Yet this isn't mere pastiche: Houdei has a distinctive voice of her own, showcased wonderfully by this heady, intoxicating piece of work.
