Eclectic Philadelphia outfit Spirit of the Beehive have had us hooked on their raw and unpredictable sound since the release of their excellent 2021 album ENTERTAINMENT, DEATH. Navigating a series of hand-break turns, the new double offering 'tapeworm / natural devotion 2' arrives alongside news of their forthcoming EP, 'i'm so lucky', and an equally intriguing video, directed by Daniel Patrick Brennan. Veering between eerie, pitch-shifted riffs and visceral bursts of noise, 'tapeworm' is a writhing opening to the track that echoes some of Alex G's heaviest moments, whilst 'natural devotion 2' reimagines a piece of theirs from 2016. Setting these seemingly disparate compositions side by side allows us to lean in to the extremes of both works to create an entirely new story. i'm so lucky will be released on the 1st of September via the continually reliable Saddle Creek. -Holly Mullineaux
