RUBY FIELDS FAIRLY TAME FAIRLY LAME

Ruby Fields made her online debut with indie-punk anthem ‘I Want’ a little less than a year ago, and the Australian newcomer has kept those riotous gems coming ever since. Now, if you’re yet to really get on board with the New South Wales rock sound, well consider Ruby Fields’ first EP, Your Dad’s Opinion For Dinner, as your gateway drug. Handily the release kicks of with the immensely witty ‘Ritalin’ and closes with an acoustic comedown ‘Redneck Lullaby’. In that sandwich of cutting lyrics, playful melodies and mega riffs, we’ve found our favourite filling - ‘Fairly Tame Fairly Lame’. While the whole EP is brilliant and imbued with a teen angst we can all relate (we have literally all been there), we’ve found ourselves hooked on the vibrant, bouncing nature of this one track. It’s a glorious combination of slacker-pop, riot grrrl and beach rock; a particular star of the show being those surf-laced guitar melodies that are so rarely pulled off so well these days. What’s even more brilliant about ‘Fairly Tame Fairly Lame’ is that it’s inspiration comes from the very real world of starting out as a musician, playing sparse gigs and being at the mercy of the audience’s preconceptions. “Just another chick with a shit guitar / screaming to the local fucks at a lonely bar / singing covers that you’re sick of hearing that are never quite on par / so here’s an original and I swear that it’s a last.” It’s like everything that every new musician wants to stay on stage, but here Ruby Fields went one step further and wrote a whole song about it. - Hannah Thacker
