‘Chapter 8’ is Jude The Obscure’s latest neo-jazz banger. The first forty seconds are a laid-back journey through luscious melodies supported by jazz piano and a shuffling drum pattern, before the accompaniment dies down and Jude’s voice takes centre stage. His lyrics are as poignant as ever, with his strong British accent providing an unexpectedly delightful contrast to the colourful piano chords twinkling beneath. The track has an uplifting feel throughout, which he explains comes from “shedding the weight of hardships and social disillusion in favour of a more light-hearted take on life. Chapter 8 reinforces the importance of keeping your head above water and overcoming personal struggles, but at the same time reminds us of the need for balance.” His debut EP is dropping in 2020. -Dan Peeke
