JOHN MYRTLE WE'RE TEARING THE HEART OUT OF LOVE
John Myrtle has shared bright-eyed new track ‘We’re Tearing the Heart out of Love’. This follows earlier single ‘How Do You Break A Heart?’, Myrtle’s first new release since his 2021 debut mini album Myrtle Soup. Heartache has evidently played upon the singer-songwriter’s mind, and tearing and breaking all sounds pretty ruthless. Though upon playing ‘We’re Tearing the Heart out of Love’, you’re consumed by warmth. Acoustic and electric guitars overlap and glimmer together in hopeful sway, melting into Myrtle’s soft-spoken vocals and uplifting harmonies. It feels inspired by the folk-pop sound of The Beatles in the mid-60s, but with a reinvigorated contemporary sunniness. The lyrics, however, seem to tell a sadder story of a relationship in which flaws are gradually revealing themselves. Speaking about the track, Myrtle has said: “I wanted to write a song that took place in the throes of an argument between two lovers, but really they both want to work it out.” With such a theme emphasised by sweet, sprightly tones, ‘We’re Tearing the Heart out of Love’ revels in optimism and wonder with an easy groove that you can’t help but bop your head to. -Kayla Sandiford
