GOAT GIRL MOTORWAY
On their new single ‘motorway’, Goat Girl have engineered a piece of music that is equal parts mechanical and alive. Calculated yet warm, drums metronomically thump and tick, a selection of synthesisers buzz and hum like distant traffic all while a subterranean bass line provides an undeniable groove. Out in front it’s Pendlebury’s vocals that lead the listener through this song. They are the engine, stopping and starting, winding and curving as Goat Girl stack harmonies and create development. Essentially, ‘motorway’ is a pop song, vocal led, melodic and catchy, but that is not to suggest it is shallow or merely functional. Over its runtime a sense of motion beautifully emanates from the track, a sense of being in between one thing and another. That’s what makes a song great, to articulate something we all experience, but can't quite name. “It conjured up feelings of being a kid in the backseat of a car, not knowing where you’re heading but feeling content,” Pendlebury explains, “or the fleeting moments you spend in new cities, and how the journey rather than destination sometimes feels like the main component”. The music video is directed by world famous choreographer and director Holly Blakey, and makes an arresting and worthy accompaniment to the track. Goat Girl’s third album Below the Waste releases via Rough Trade on June 7th. -Adam Brown
