GLASS EEL THE LINE

Inspired by the second, translucent phase of an eel's life cycle, where young creatures drift unseen through the ocean like strands of glass, Glass Eel is a new project by Alice Western, capturing a sense of dislocation, fragility and survival. With that in mind, 'The Line' is a fitting introduction, floating somewhat vacantly between Mazzy Star-esque acoustic guitar strums and roomy acoustic drums. Punctuated with textural flute interludes, Western's storytelling sits front and centre, navigating the precariousness of holding yourself together when everything around you feels chaotic an uncertain. Much like walking a tightrope, 'The Line' is thoughtful, considered and earnest in its attempt to maintain its footing. Out now via Memorials of Distinction, 'The Line' arrives alongside a suitably melancholy video directed by Hannah McLoughlin and Alice Western herself. Watch and listen here now. -Holly Mullineaux
