Yorkshire-based Finlay’s latest track, ‘Evolution’ is a hard-hitting release. A reflective, emotional track, the impetus behind it is built on “the emotional grey area that separates childhood from adulthood”. This is felt in the music straight away, with sparse piano textures supporting his anguished voice and dissonant chords adding a potent pain to this accompaniment. Beyond this, the quiet addition of a drum kit and the slow layering of angelic backing vocals create an almost goosebump-inducing feeling that proves his worth as a songwriter.
