FALLE NIOKE & GHOST CULTURE BARKé

Singer and percussionist Falle Nioke grew up in Guinea Conakry, West Africa and uses a plethora of different languages to express himself from his village's own Coniagui to French, English, Susu, Fulani and Malinke. Yesterday Noike announced his forthcoming collaborative EP with London-based ethereal dance producer and Phantasy signing Ghost Culture. The lead track from Youkounkoun (which is named after Nioke's village, where the Coniagui live) is a complimentary combination of Nioke's dynamic vocal melodies and Ghost Culture's masterfully smooth electronics. Setting buoyant synth bass stabs against a ticking drum machine, 'Barké''s groove is addictive and irresistible. Explaining the story behind 'Barké', which means blessing in English, Nioke explains: “Where I grew up, we say you have two get blessings from you parents...t is not something money can buy. One of my friends told me he couldn't understand why he was struggling, why he couldn’t succeed in business and why no opportunities were coming his way. “There was an old man listening to us talking who asked, ‘do you have parents?" My friend said that he did. The man said to go and visit them and when you see them working you must help them. Give them a hand and once you do that you will get a blessing. That is a secret of this life.” Youkounkoun will arrive on the 10th of July via the innovative Moshi Moshi offshoot PRAH Recordings. -Holly Mullineaux
