CARMEL SMICKERSGILL GREETING
Leeds born composer Carmel Smickersgill has found a steady footing in the music scene, stretching her talent to studying at the Royal Northern College of Music, linking with New Order for an ambitious MIF commissioned composition, as well as collaborating with Anna Meredith. Working with producer Marco Woolf, Carmel's debut EP will land next year on PRAH Recordings, with the artist sharing her breath-taking debut single 'Greeting'. The single sees extended vocal breaths create eerie chords, smothered in a church-like reverb. Carmel's vocals hang over a minimal electronic beat, and are propped by distorted cellos for a transcendental sound. As the track progresses, the low-pitch brass intensifies, carrying an iron-like resonance, accompanied by mutated double-speed electronics. ““Greeting” is an introduction to a new way of working for myself as an artist," says Smickersgill. "It features my own voice, something I’ve previously avoided using in my work. I love bold sounds that don’t shrink away and lay down a statement of intent to the listener rather than beautiful subtle noises. “Greeting” definitely plays up to this preference." Carmel Smickersgill plays a series of shows in November. -Ellie Rose-Davies
