BLOOD WIZARD BABYTOOTH
Serving as a visual metaphor for a loss of innocence, 'babytooth' is the characterful new single from South London-based, Nottingham-born artist Blood Wizard. Placing lighthearted lyricism and nursery-rhyme backing vocals atop of slow compressed drums, distorted guitars and angsty verses, there's a welcome sense of self-aware humour that makes the piece all the more relatable. Blood Wizard (aka Cai Burns) explains: "babytooth is a call to my inner child to stick around a bit longer. Making music is something that connects me to that chaotic, childlike energy that can so easily be lost. That energy is something I’ve wanted to try and nurture by returning to a more instinctual way of writing music that focuses more on feelings and less on thoughts. For me the song feels like losing a part of yourself to the big, bad world, like it’s slipping through your fingers when you’re not ready to let it go". Citing influences from Alex G to Cate Le Bon, 'babytooth' is an eclectic and accomplished earworm from one of the most underrated artists in the South London scene. -Holly Mullineaux
