BIG OIL LIFE FOR RENT
A mainstay in South London's thriving music scene, Baggio band-leader Ben Wyborn lifts the lid on their Big Oil moniker with the tender new offering 'life for rent'. Appearing Dweller of the Ditch, an entirely instrumental 6-track EP, 'life for rent' is an intimate and mellow introduction to the wider release. Produced by Wyborn's long-term friend and collaborator, the cult bedroom-folk artist Trust Fund (aka Ellis Jones), Wyborn recalls: “Ellis had text me a few months prior, asking if I wanted to come up and stay for a weekend and record ‘something’. It took me a while to work out what that ‘something’ might be. I’d had the idea of an instrumental record lingering at the back of my mind for a long time, and started slowly pulling together some threads and ideas until I had these six tracks I was happy with. I went to Sheffield with a pretty loose idea of what we were going to create, but we seemed to fall onto the same path as one another pretty quickly and the whole record came together like a dream. A lot of these pieces were written whilst staying at my Dad’s house in the West Country, and influenced by those landscapes which surrounded me. It made sense to me to bring a visual element to the music by recorded these spaces which I was trying to evoke in the music.” Due for release via Sad Machine on the 28th of March, Dweller of the Ditch is a touching example of the power of music, friendship and spontaneity. -Holly Mullineaux
