ANNA BUTTERSS POKEMANS
Bassist and composer Anna Butterss has dropped their new single and video, ‘Pokemans’. It’s a unique listening experience defined by Butterss’ desire to use the bass in an atypical way. The end result is a shimmery, video game-adjacent piece of lo-fi electronic music, filled with deep melody, 808 drum patterns and nostalgically square synths. In the middle of the track, things briefly twist as a manic, distorted sax solo appears over a jazz drum pattern for just a few moments. Their new album, Mighty Vertebrate, is out on October 4th, 2024, and was created in a pretty unique way: “I had just gotten off of a bunch of touring at the end of 2022 and just wanted to write music. The best way for me to do that, I’ve found, is to set myself a discrete and focused task. I’m going to make a song where the bass doesn’t function in the role of a bass. I’m going to work on this for an hour and then I’m going to stop. I’m going to make a song that uses groups of three-bar phrasing. Every song was like that.” -Dan Peeke
