HALLS BABY (INFINITE LOSS)
Today, British producer and musician Halls closes one chapter of his life with the release of Infinite Loss, a long player which explores and purges the grief that Sam Howard has dealt with since the passing of his father to cancer. The final single from the album, titled ‘Baby (Infinite Loss)’, is an elongated piece of experimental electronic ambience. Shifts in piano scales portray the subtle changes to emotions. There’s the blistering pain as we hear backing the line “god it hurts so bad”. Following this, there’s a mild uptick in feeling represented in that moment just before one fully wakes up to a new reality, as Howard sings, “in the morning, I can hear your voice, and it’s calling me.” An absolute torrent of melancholy comes into being with surges of fuzzed electronic noise and heavily warped vocals; this is raw, vulnerable, but also thanks to the overtly produced nature, disconnected from everyone and everything else. If you read any of our others reviews of Halls’ new work, such as ‘The Gift’, ‘Hallelujah’ and ‘Face To Face’, you’ll know that this artist’s true talent lies in his ability to clearly define and express emotion, space, setting and even a sense of time and ‘Baby’ is no exception. Although the Infinite Loss LP marks one ending, it also beckons a new beginning for Halls, who has gifted his music to listeners who may find solidarity in his experience; a comfort in knowing that their pain isn’t theirs alone, but one that can be shared. - Hannah Thacker
